There were very few people that believed in me or my ability to thrive on my own terms and without altering my entire being to do so.
Mrs. Flag, my fourth grade teacher did...she encouraged me and told me that I was important. She introduced me to poetry and Langston Hughes--I've been in love with both poetry and this poem ever since. I, remember she encouraged me to recite this particular piece and to use my "personality" while doing so. She was so thrilled with my delivery, that I began to believe that, I, too was someone.
30+ years later, this remains my favorite piece of his, and my God do I relate to this even more so now. I've recorded this for my son...as in my own way, and in my own time, I walked in this woman's shoes. I hope you all enjoy.
